Every time there is a hike in gas price, people go on a tizzy and the global economy slows down. But it only the beginning since fossil fuels will run out at some point in time. This is why there has been a big push to find optimal alternates to fuel our energy needs. There are several renewable sources of energy, and none of them are perfect, just yet. In this article, we will briefly explain the pros and cons of the alternatives to fossil fuels.
- Solar Energy
Solar energy has an endless supply and is clean energy. Once installed, solar panels need very little maintenance and they could even help you get off the grid completely. On the flip side, it is quite an expensive investment, requires big space to put up enough panels to meet your needs and the production of solar panels causes a lot of pollution.
- Wind energy
Just like solar energy, wind energy is clean and available in abundance. It does not pollute the air and it could be built on existing farms. But wind power can be harvested only in certain areas and it is completely weather dependent. Noisy wind turbines may need constant maintenance due to mechanical parts. It is also a danger to birdlife since there is no way to stop birds from flying into fast rotating fans.
- Geothermal energy
Geothermal energy is one of the more recent alternates to fossil fuel. The technology and mechanism to harvest this new form is still under development. But when it is ready, geothermal energy could be one of the most effective alternates to fossil fuels. It is very efficient and available for as long as the earth rotates. But setting up a system has a very high initial investment and it will still need to use electricity to operate the system.
As technology improves, we could become efficient in extracting energy from these renewable sources in the future.
